The principal team members are members and acted in leadership roles in various industry groups, including Midwest Association of Housing Management Agents (MAHMA), National Apartments Association (NAA), Apartment Association of Indiana (AAI), Apartment Association of Southern Indiana (AASI), Indiana Commercial Board of Realtors (ICBR), Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), and Institute of Real Estate Management (IREM), to name a few. The Principals have served as members of state and national leadership including Chair of National Property Management Task Force for the Council for Affordable & Rural Housing (CAHR). 


Steve Martin was a founding member and former President of the Rural Rental Housing Association of Indiana. He has served as a three term President for the Local Apartment Association and has been a three time SW Indiana Representative of the Indiana Apartment Association Board of Directors. Steve has been a two term South West Indiana District Representative for the Indiana Commercial Board of Realtors (ICBR), has served as the 2012 Secretary/Treasurer, the 2013 Vice President, and as the 2014 President of ICBR.  Steve was awarded the 2013 REALTOR® of the Year by ICBR because “his dedication and vision has helped transform the commercial real estate industry in Indiana.”


The Martin Group takes a leadership role in community activities as well. Steve was the Chair of Site Selection and Advisor for the $35 million development of the Downtown Central Library and 2 satellite libraries. All fees were donated back to the library or literacy organizations. Steve was also a board member for Keep Evansville Beautiful for the max 10 years and served as Chairman. He was recently honored to be inducted as a lifetime Board Member.  Steve is a founding member and current member of the Evansville Executive Forum (A University of Evansville sponsored organization); and has been the featured speaker for University of Evansville Classes to seniors and in the Executive MBA Program.

Real estate redefined

The Martin Group of Companies started in January 1976 when John and Steve Martin (Father & Son) decided to build apartments together. John had just built a 30 unit senior citizen property in Huntingburg, IN and Steve was working Advertising & Public Relations at Jasper Engines & Transmissions in Jasper, IN.  John, a practicing Public Accountant, liked the first property he had built and wanted to do more but his accounting practice wouldn’t permit it. Steve, a recent graduate of the University of Evansville, at the time was young and inexperienced but full of energy. They decided to try working together for a year and see what happened. Now after all these years, they decided it will probably work out pretty well. John sold his accounting practice and the two of them have established a real estate practice together. John’s son, David, was also involved for 18 years until a REIT hired him to use his experience developing medical office buildings throughout the Midwest. Now, The Martin Group is starting the third generation with Steve’s sons, Alex and Andy joining the family business.
